Before mass this morning, Matthew and Christopher Price did a good job of cleaning and filling the high altar candles.
Our celebrant was Fr.Norman Price with Fr.Croft as deacon and Chris Lawton as sub-deacon.

Con-celebrants were Fr.Mark Brackley, who also preached, and Canon Paul Denby.

Hot Pot Supper & 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

On Saturday evening our Hot Pot Supper was held in the School Hall. Maryrose Greenwood is checking the winning numbers for a house of bingo.

After the bingo, the supper was served from the new school kitchen.

After the supper Father Croft did the raffle.

At the end of the evening, Father Croft thanked everyone who had supported the function which raised £501 for church funds.

Sunday morning, and Fr.Croft is leading the intercessions.

Our celebrant today was Fr.Mark Brackley.

Con-celebrants were Fr.Norman Price and Canon Paul Denby, who was also our preacher.

Stephen Smith was our thurifer again today.

Next Saturday we have a Line Dancing Evening in the School Hall from 7.00 pm.

Ash Wednesday is on 22nd February and there will be High Mass at 7.30 pm.

Quite a heavy snowfall in Prestwich on Saturday afternoon, and low temperatures meant for a low turn-out today. Joe Walk is shovelling snow off the church path.
As it was Candlemass last Thursday, candles were given to the congregation and Fr.Croft began the service by blessing the candles.

Fr.Croft was our celebrant and Fr.Norman Price was deacon and preacher. Stephen Smith was thurifer.

Confirmation at St.Hilda's

On this special day, Stephen Smith as crucifer leads Fr.Croft down to the nave to read the Gospel.

The three candidates at the font about to be sprinkled with holy water by the Bishop of Beverley. Matthew Price had a busy time looking after the Bishop's crozier.

The Bishop then confirmed each of the three candidates and anointed them with holy oil of Chrism.

The Bishop sang the Mass, and Fr.Norman Price and Canon Paul Denby were con-celebrants.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

We have had a substantial hand rail fitted by the rear entrance where the platform has been extended to prevent anyone else taking a fall.

We are sorry to note the death of Fr.David Quance, seen here second from the right at our Patronal Festival last November. He died in Cyprus whilst on a locum visit.

During the first hymn, 'As with gladness men of old', we paused to bless the holy house to mark the coming of the wise men with their gifts.

Although New Year's Day fell on a Sunday we had the usual High Mass with a respectable 54 in the congregation.

Next Sunday will be Epiphany transferred from the 6th.

Christmas 2011

Third Sunday in Advent

The vestments worn today are from Holy Trinity, Bury, and we borrowed them from St.Augustine's, Tonge Moor, where they are presently stored.

After Mass a good number went to The Red Hall at Ramsbottom for our annual Christmas Lunch.

And finally, Fr.Croft thanked everyone for coming to such an enjoyable meal and gave his best wishes to all for Christmas.

Saturday was our annual Quiz Night in the school hall organised by John and Gary, to whom we are very grateful as it raised £345 for our funds

Patronal Festival

Remembrance Sunday

Our service began at 10.55, celebrant Fr.Mark Brackley introduced the two minute silence.
The reading of the Gospel by Fr.Croft who then preached.

It was good to have Chris Price with us as thurifer today.

Fr.Norman Price was concelebrant and wore his own vestments.

Stephen Smith was sub-deacon and adminstered the chalice for the first time since he is one of three new people to be licensed by the Bishop.

The wreath was placed on the war memorial at the end of the service.

Autumn Fair & 32nd in Ordinary Time

Saturday was our Autumn Fair and the cake stall was well stocked as usual.

On Saturday evening we welcomed the Radcliffe Male Voice Choir again for a concert.

As ever, the conductor had a good sprinkling of jokes to tell between the items. The event raised a splendid £501 towards our Parish Share payment to the Diocese.

Dedication Festival

In our fine gold vestments, we celebrated the 107th birthday of our church which was actually dedicated on 18th October 1904.

As Les Withers was unable to be with us, Stephen Smith stood in as thurifer.

Musical Evening

Saturday evening and the church is laid out like the Cafe Royal for a Musical Evening.
As it was 3rd September, the evening began with the sound of an air raid siren, followed by Fr.Norman playing the 'Dambusters March' on the organ, and rounded off by the 'all clear' siren.
Other musical items were played by the string quartet of Jane, Matthew, Kim and Chris, and then Fr.Norman did a musical quiz.

Then Fr.Norman gave a full rendition of Mendelssohn's 'Wedding March'.

The string quartet excelled with the penultimate piece, the 'Sleeping Beauty Waltz' by Tchaikovsky.

And the final piece had all five joining together for Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus'.

Then Fr.Croft, assisted by Joe Walk did a seemingly never-ending raffle.

And finally a splendid buffet from Slattery's. Here we see Irene Egerton and Phyllis getting the buffet ready - the whole evening had been Irene's idea and it has made a splendid £816 for church funds.

St.Bartholomew's Church, Brighton Trinity 9

St.Bartholomew's Church towers above all the other buildings around. It is 135 ft high and taller than most cathedrals.
The entrance in Ann Street is passed by many people and is kept open during the day by a team of volunteers.

The interior is so vast and all built in brick. Apologies that my photos are not so clear because of the great space involved.

High Mass was celebrated by Fr.Geoffrey Baulcomb who is looking after the church during the present interregnum.

Bible Reading Open Day & 15th in Ordinary Time

On Saturday we held a Bible Reading Open Day as part of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Each parish in the Deanery was asked to read one book of the bible aloud and invite people to listen. We chose to read the 1st Book of Samuel and after I had read the first 3 chapters, Margaret Finch followed.
Margaret split her readings with Pat Clarke so that they both read twice.

Carole East could hardly been seen behind the lectern!

Gill Haydock gave a good account of Jonathan defeating the Philistines.

Matthew Price read to us about David & Jonathan.

Joe Walk tackled 4 chapters about Saul pursuing David.

Hilary Graham was the penultimate reader, and yours truly finished off the last of the 31 chapters. It took 2 and three quarter hours. Thanks to all who helped.

Maenwhile, Phyllis and Beth were keeping people fed and watered in the Community Room.

Only a solemn mass today with Fr. Croft being celebrant and preacher.

The church was full for the baptism of baby Harry, and here Fr.Croft blesses the water in the font.

Fund Raising Evening

On Saturday evening we had a most successful social evening at Beth's in Egerton Street. This is the gang who commandeered the house.
Outside there were more enjoying the lovely evening and the food and drink!

At the bottom of Beth's garden another place was found to enjoy the gathering.

John and Gary, Beth's next door neighbours, let us spill into their garden, and here Betty, Olwen and Sheila are plant-spotting.

John and Gary also had a barbecue for us with chicken, sausages and burgers.

The bottom of John and Gary's garden is like a hidden grotto.

Later on, as it got a bit cooler, out came the wonderful patio heater.

And as it started to go dark the garden was lit with many different kinds of lamps and candles.

And finally a shot of Beth herself, glass in hand! The event has raised £325 and thanks to all who helped, donated, and supported an excellent evening.

Corpus Christi

At the end of the mass the Blessed Sacrament was taken in procession around the church. Here the procession assembles whilst Fr.Croft puts the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance.

Trinity & Ordination

Fr.Croft gave the blessing at the end of Mass.
Next Sunday we shall keep as Corpus Christi.

At 3.00 p.m many went to St.Margaret's Church, Hollinwood for the Ordination to the Priesthood of Fr.Simon Sayer.

The Homily was given by the Parish Priest, Fr. David Hawthorn seen in the pulpit on the left.

Fr.Simon is presented to the Bishop and the Archdeacon of Rochdale and the Diocesan Registrar spoke on his behalf.

After the laying on of hands, Fr.David helps Fr.Simon into his chasuble.

This week the wall has been rebuilt and it looks splendid.
There is still some finishing off to be done and tidying up.

Spring Fair

The Spring Fair was held this morning in the school hall. The plant stall before they were all sold!

The cake stall filled with the usual goodies.

Easter 4

Les Withers had the thurible in orbit as usual.

After Mass, the church was filled with a very large baptism party.

Next Saturday is the Spring Fair in the School Hall from 10.00 - 1.00.

Next Sunday we have May Devotions at 6.00 pm with the usual buffet afterwards.

On Monday 23rd May the newly elected PCC meets for the first time.

Easter 3

After Mass, a fund raising Cheese and Wine Party was held at the home of Marion Lees.

Fortunately the weather was kind after all the rain of the previous night.

Inside the house raffle tickets were being bought and sold.

And some found it easier to be inside to eat and drink.

Slaidburn

St.Andrew's Church, Slaidburn in the Diocese of Bradford. The grounds are immaculate and the church is in good order.
A very old rood screen and some old box pews make a very interesting church.

This is St.George's Church in Dunsop Bridge which is also in the Parish of Slaidburn.

Reading the Report from the recent Annual Parochial Church Meeting, it is wonderful to see how the church survives in such rural areas. The average normal Sunday attendance at St.Andrew's is 24, and at St.George's is 11 for their once a month service. The Vicar retires in September and it is hoped that a House for Duty Priest can be found to cover Slaidburn and Tosside.

A concrete base has now been laid for the rebuilding of the wall.

The back of the church is now finished with new platform and steps to match what was already done two years ago. The gates have been re-hung and the hand rail put back.

An early start today at 10.30 and for the last time we started our Mass with the Asperges.

Fr.Croft gave his blessing.

The Annual Meeting followed and a good number attended.

The scaffolding has now come down from the new school kitchen extension.

Because the gateway has been moved, the platform outside the back door of the church is to be extended and already the base has been laid.

The builders have also made a start on rebuilding the boundary wall.

The base has been cut out so a new concrete base can be laid. We have launched an appeal for supporters to buy a brick for the wall at £5 each.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday and the Mass will start outside at 10.55 am

Lenten Supper & First Sunday in Lent

On Saturday afternoon work was still continuing to grind out the tree stumps and roots.

The new outside wall of the school kitchen extension is taking shape.

Saturday evening was our annual Lenten Hot Pot Supper, and here we see churchwarden Maryrose Greenwood at her usual station calling the bingo numbers.

After the bingo it was supper time and on the far left is the queue for the hot pot. Here we also see all the portions of fruit pies laid out for 'afters', and on the right the new school furniture which is not suitable for our use. Because the school has this new type of dining furniture, the old tables and chairs have been donated to the church so that we can use them when the school hall is used for a church function. Unfortuately, it means that all the tables and chairs have to be brought over from church and taken back again afterwards, so thanks to all who were able to lend a hand on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Here we see the hot pot being served from the present school kitchen.

A record number came to the evening so that a healthy £500 was raised for church funds.

Sunday morning Mass began with the Asperges, and here we see Fr.Mark Brackley sprinkling the congregation.

The Sanctus. Fr.Norman Price was our preacher today but as he was also our organist he is not seen in the sanctuary.

This evening Fr. Croft led Stations of the Cross, as is our usual Lenten practice.

On Wednesday at 1.00 pm. there will be a Requiem Mass for Doreen Price, a regular member of of St.Hilda's congregation.

Bury College Dinner

A line up of the student chefs of Bury College who had prepared our meal tonight. Most were first year students and they came out so that we could thank them, and then they went round the tables to let people ask them questions about what they had done.

A good four course meal was enjoyed by the 44 people who attended.

On Thursday evening there is the fund raising meal at Bury College at 7.00 p.m.

On Saturday it is the Lenten Hot Pot Supper in the school hall from 7.00 p.m.

Run the Race

This evening, my fellow warden, Maryrose Greenwood and myself went to Manchester Cathedral for a ticket only service to celebrate the completion of Bishop Nigel's Pilgrimage to all the parishes in the Diocese. After a long time in the queue to get inside we were seated in the Regimental Chapel which has no view of the Nave because the organ is in the way! However, in order to let everyone see what was happening there were many TV monitors around the building. Most of these photos show the views on the monitor. At the beginning of the service, Bishop Nigel paid tribute to Canon Roger Hill (right) who had assisted him with his parish visits.

The Archbishop of York gave an address about 'Running the Race' which had been the theme of the Pilgrimage, using the Commonwealth Games baton which will now be kept in the Cathedral.

Mr. Alan Cooper (centre) was admitted to the Order of William Temple for his long service in the Diocese.

In the Regimental Chapel, the Bishop signed a copy of the King James Bible, as had both Archbishops.

The Archbishop of Canterbury gave the final address and urged us all to put our trust in God.

8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Being the last Sunday of the month, it was Evensong this evening and Fr.Croft censes the altar during The Magnificat.

But this week, work has started on a new kitchen for the school, so our boundary wall has been taken down, for the new kitchen extension will come to the path.

This means that we are unable to use the rear entrance to the Community Room so all access has to be through the church until the work is completed.

The view of the west end of the church now that the trees have been taken down. This has opened up the vista of the church and so we now see it as it was when completed.

At the moment the area is still rather a mess, but it will be tidied up, the wall rebuilt, and we are to consider what we can do with the garden to make it attractive but with low maintenance. On the left is the remains of a flag pole which we didn't know existed! Work to remove the tree stumps is to begin next week.

Licensing & Installation at St.Paul's, Royton

This evening Rev'd Canon Peter McEvitt was licensed and installed as Priest-in-charge of the Benefice of St.Paul, Royton and Holy Trinity, Shaw. Before the service the official photographer assembled the 'dignitories' - on the left Rev'd David Penny, Area Dean of Oldham West; Ven. Cherry Vann, Archdeacon of Rochdale; Canon Peter McEvitt being welcomed by the Mayor of Oldham, with the Bishop of Beverley between them.

Fr.Peter was given water which he poured into the font.

At the lectern Fr.Peter was presented with a Bible. Fr.Simon Sayer, on the left, was Bishop's Chaplain for the service.

This week a start has been made on taking down the wall prior to the felling of the trees.

Next Saturday afternoon we are holding an Afternoon Tea from 2 -4, the latest in our fund raising activities.

Although Wednesday is the Feast of Candlemas, the congregation were given candles this morning and Fr.Norman Price began the service by blessing the candles with holy water.

On Friday over 30 people turned up at Phyllis' house in Unsworth for a fund raising evening which had been postponed from mid-December because of the weather.

Everyone enjoyed a great spread - seen here in the conservatory - and £250 was raised for our funds on a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to Phyllis & Les Withers for the event.

The Wise Men have come to the stable bringing their gifts, as we celebrated The Epiphany a little early this year.

Christmas Eve Midnight Mass on a bitterly cold (-7) night managed to attract a congregation of 41, nowhere near the normal number, but good in view of the continuing freezing temperatures.

Carol Service

A good turnout on a bitterly cold Monday evening for our annual service of lessons and carols.

Matthew Price read the first lesson, Fr.Croft gave a homily, and Fr.Norman Price read the bidding prayer.

It was great to have a small group from our day school who sang three songs for us.

This song involved some hand actions! Considering the school had 'broken up' last Friday for the holiday, we were pleased that this small group had come to make our service special.

The service was followed by soup, mulled wine and mince pies. Thanks to all who sang, read, and did the catering.

Our Midnight Mass begins at 11.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with Mass on Christmas Day at 11.00 a.m.

Advent 4

Heavy snow on Friday evening still very much with us for the time being!

But the snow prevented many from coming to Mass today, so the Grand Draw has been postponed for two weeks as people still have counterfoils to bring in for the draw.

A foggy morning with icy pavements meant a somewhat reduced congregation today.

We were pleased to have Chris Price with us today as crucifer.

Quiz Night & Christ the King

Saturday night was our annual Quiz Night hosted for us by John & Gary.

An excellent turn out with 60 people making 10 teams.

After the results of the Quiz won by the 'Prairie Dogs' team, there was the raffle. Here you can see Sheila on the left with her prize.

A good congregation were blessed with warmth since we have had temporary repairs following Sunday's major leak. The radiator has had to be by-passed - the old pipework and radiators are struggling to keep up with the new boilers!

Remembrance Sunday

Our service today began with the two minutes silence.

Fr.Norman Price was celebrant today, with Fr.Croft as concelebrant and preacher. Fr.Mark Brackley was deacon and Chris Lawton was sub-deacon.

Back to Our Lady for The Angelus.

Big problems this morning as we found a leak in the pipework below a radiator in the north aisle. Fr.Croft got Eddie, a plumber who lives opposite the church, to come and he had to drain the system. In the centre of the picture you can see the water draining from the pipe in the boiler house. Fortunately there is a drain for it to flow away.

The aftermath of the mopping up. We will have to get the heating engineers who installed the boilers to come and repair the problem. Hopefully, we will have heat restored for Wednesday evening when we celebrate our Patronal Festival at 7.30 pm.

As a postscript to yesterday's successful Autumn Fair, I can report that, with some generous donations today, the total raised is now £1,375!

Betty Hutchinson was probably the only one who could get away with marking Fr.Croft's recent birthday by surprising him with a cake. After a little speech, Betty lights the candles.

Fr.Croft was about to cut the cake, but was reminded that he needed to blow out the candles first, and we all finally got the chance to sing 'Happy Birthday'.

A busy week

St.Luke's Church, Lightbowne celebrated its centenary last weekend and it culminated on Monday evening with the Centenary Mass as the Church had been originally dedicated on All Saints' Day.

Before the service. The church was full of flowers and the vestments were hung on the pillars.

The main celebrant and preacher was the Bishop of Beverley.

Concelebrants were Fr. Philip Stamp, from Holy Trinity, Blackley and priest in charge of the Parish, Fr.David Sutton, Fr. John O'Connor, curate in charge of St.Luke's, and Fr. David Quance.

Mr.Laurie Clapham was server and so following Fr.Croft's recent birthday, that was two octogenarians at the altar.

The Autumn Fair began at 10.00 in St.Hilda's School.

All Saints

At the end of the notices Fr.Norman Price went to join Fr.Croft to congratulate him on his forthcoming birthday on Tuesday when he will be 80. Fr.Croft has made great emphasis that he wanted no party or presents but Fr.Norman got everyone to give a round of applause.

Two photos follow of the teddies that have been made for the charity 'Teddies for Tragedy' which we are supporting. The teddies each have a bag so that the sick children who are given a teddy can put any other little treasures in it.

On Friday of this week there will be a Requiem Mass at 11.00 for choir member George Bohanna who sadly died last Friday after a short illness.

Finally, a reminder that next Saturday is our Autumn Fair from 10.00 until 1.00.

Last Sunday we had Chris Price back from university for the weekend and so he was thurifer.

Matthew Dennen was also back with us as crucifer.

Dedication Festival

Today was our Dedication Festival, when we were celebrating the church's 106th birthday. The Gospel was read by Fr.Croft, followed by the homily from Fr.Norman Price, who was also our organist.

Canon Paul Denby was celebrant although he is still recovering from a leg operation just over a week ago.

Another photo of the baptistry roof - the lead has been replaced and painted with anti-vandal paint as have the downspouts, and the area protected by barbed wire. Unfortunate, but necessary to prevent and more lead being stolen.

Harvest Supper & 28th Sunday

Saturday evening in the School Hall for the Harvest hot pot supper. A packed room with over 60 playing bingo. Phyllis Lefevre was bingo caller aided by Margaret Finch as checker. It was good to have Maryrose Greenwood back with us, although still on crutches after her hip replacement operation.

Fr.Croft came to do the raffle and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

Fr.Mark Brackley was our celebrant today for High Mass with Fr.Croft as deacon and Chris Lawton as sub-deacon. Les Withers was wielding the thurible.

A view of our new gas boilers. It was too wet last week to go down to the boiler house. The stainless steel flues lead into the big pipe above which......

...is fed outside to the new stainless steel chimney as the old chimney wasn't big enough to take the flue.

Over the baptistry you can see where someone has been trying to remove the lead. Unfortunately they were successful in removing some of the lead lower down and so we will need remedial works and more security.

Next Friday, Canon Denby will be having a small operation on his leg so we remember him in our prayers this week. Next Saturday is the Harvest Supper & Bingo in the School Hall from 7.00 pm.

First Mass

On Saturday 2nd October, a party from St.Hilda's travelled to St.George's Church, Preston for the first celebration of the Mass by Fr. Andrew Teather since his ordination by the Bishop of Burnley on Wednesday evening. Here the sanctuary party starts to leave the sacristy and the choir are on the balcony above.

After the confession, Fr.Andrew gives the first of many blessings. Fr. Timothy Lipscomb acted as clerical MC.

The first reading was by Fr.Andrew's brother.

The Gospel was read by the deacon, Fr.Simon Sayer.

This evening, being the last Sunday of the month, we had Evensong and Benediction.

Radcliffe Male Voice Choir

On Saturday evening we were happy to welcome the Radcliffe Male Voice Choir once again, for a concert, and they took us down memory lane with their songs.

Canon Peter McEvitt was our principal celebrant today, and led by Chris Lawton as sub-deacon and Fr.Croft as deacon, they process to the top of the nave after having censed the altar.

Thurifer Christopher Price censes the congregation for the last time for a while as he starts at Keele University next weekend. We send him our best wishes for his future studies.

This is our oil fired boiler which was removed at the beginning of the week.

And these are the two smaller gas fired boilers which replace the oil fired boiler. Hopefully the installation will be completed in the coming week.

High Mass this morning and the Gospel procession returns with Canon Paul Denby on the left waiting to go and preach his sermon.

As it was a Bank Holiday weekend, there was an expected dip in numbers but some extra visitors helped to swell the congregation to over 50.

Chris Price censes Fr.Croft. Last weekend Chris celebrated his 18th birthday at Walsingham and got a surprise party! Next month he will go to Keele University and we wish him well with his studies there.

Today we had a concelebration by Fr.Norman Price and Fr.Croft who also preached.

Two organists today. This is Tim's friend Simon who lives near Chelmsford and was visiting for the weekend. This is the second time he has come and shared the playing with Tim.

Simon played the voluntary after the Mass and Tim turned the pages for him.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Yes, it is a photo of our new gas meter which was installed in January when the gas was laid on to the church, but it has never been used because our new gas boiler will only be installed on September 6th. Imagine the surprise of our Treasurer, Phyllis, this week to receive a gas bill for £3,765.06 for gas used since January, and it was not an estimated bill, as somehow British Gas had mysteriously got readings! Isn't it typical of the trouble people have with these utility companies. So the photo has now been emailed to them to prove that we have not used any gas.

As it is our Parish Pilgrimage to Walsingham this weekend, we were fortunate to have Canon Paul Denby and Fr.Mark Brackley to concelebrate for us. Fr.Mark also was our preacher.
